Come And Get It - The Best Of Apple Records: Various Artists

More Views

In its relatively short life, Apple Records signed and nurtured a number of extremely different artists. Some achieved enormous commercial success, while others performed less well but achieved cult status which has continued to grow over the years. Many of these albums were issued on CD for the first time over a period of years beginning in 1991. These have become the standard versions that have lasted almost twenty years. A lot has happened since 1991, particularly in terms of technology, so when it was decided to re-vamp the catalogue for the MP3 generation, it also provided us with an opportunity to improve the physical versions too. The albums have all been re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios by many of the same team who worked on the recent Beatles’ releases and are presented in card softpaks with new notes and photographic material.

In terms of audio content, on most of the albums bonus material has been added and in addition to this many of the titles have also feature exclusive digital downloads. In most, but not all cases, previous material selected as bonus content has been retained either as part of the CD or within in the download offering.

This 21-track CD serves as a great overview of the Apple catalogue, and is a useful introduction to a label that achieved and enormous amount in a very short space of time. Some artists stayed the course, others disappeared as fast as they had arrived, some went on to better and bigger things having made a start at Apple. They all left an impression. Alongside Badfinger, James Taylor, Mary Hopkin, Billy Preston, Doris Troy, Jackie Lomax appear The Black Dyke Mills Band, Trash, Ronnie Spector, The Hot Chocolate Band, The Radha Krsna Temple (London), Chris Hodge, Sundown Playboys, Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band and Lon and Derrek Van Eaton and the never-released-single by Brute Force - “King Of Fuh”.
