At the MGM Grand on Decemer 31, 1993, Barbara Streisand returned to the concert stage for the first time in 27 years and delivered a spectacular live performance, hailed as the one of the best of her career. Now, the richness of this legendary special event can be shared by all with the DVD, "The Concert - Live At The MGM Grand".
Featuring a new 5.1 mix by Grammy winner Bill Schnee, this superb digital DVD also includes the very special bonus of two rare tracks from Barbra's groundbreaking CBS specials from the '60s. The two songs, "When The Sun Comes Out" from "My Name Is Barbra", and "It Had To Be You" from "Color Me Barbra", have been out of print in any form since the mid 1980s and are being released on DVD for the very first time.
Rather than simply a "greatest hits" shows, the production was designed along the autobiographical lines of a one-woman Broadway show. Barbra employed music and stories to reflect on such matters as childhood dreams, relationships, family ties and social responsibilities.
From Barbra's first phrase...."I don't know why I'm frightened" in the opening number (performed on a set resembling an elegant tea room in a colonial mansion, backed by a 64 piece orchestra) to the final note of the anthem "Somewhere", Barbra completes an artistic tour de force. Highlights include a customised version of the song "As If We Never Had To Say Goodbye", that served as a type of reacquaintance with her fans, a medley of Disney songs (performed only at this show) and a special appearance by Mike Myers as Linda Richman.
