It was once said in the early fifties about another renowned trumpeter, that he played music that was so high only dogs could hear it, because only dogs would want to hear it. Well this CD is truly one for the dogs, plus a whole bunch of real cats out there!
But seriously this is not just a pure "Scream" recording as the name may suggest, but a display of the pure virtuosity and musicianship of James Morrison in the trumpet's upper register. Something we fans have been anxiously waiting for over many years. James plays five trumpet parts over the top of a rhythm section, a technique that he has employed with great success on previous albums, 'Snappy Doo', 'Manner Dangerous' and 'Postcards from Downunder'. In this case the rhythm section is one that dreams are made of.
It features monster drummer David Jones, bassist Evripides Evripidou and 'The Zog', Peter Zografakis on guitar. These guys combine to achieve a funky chase-like feel (remember the seventies?) with a very infectious contemporary vitality. This recording simply 'cooks'!
So lock the dogs outside, put earmuffs on your mother (or mother-in-law), crank up the speakers and enter the stratospheric world of James Morrison. (Bruce Bromley May 16 2001)
